Larian Studios Reveal a Latest Divinity, Labeling it Their Most Ambitious RPG Ever

The buzz around this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer that included striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This choice of words implies that the team is likely designing a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. For now, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it pioneered the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, player agency, and deep class systems—qualities that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs that are viable with a particular class or origin with a personal story.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, letting players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be completed in diverse methods, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you recalled something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, players can look forward to more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
