Powerful Gales Cause Tens of Thousands Without Power in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Locals encouraged to remain inside as strong winds batter the nation.

Intense winds reaching velocities of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have resulted in around 90,000 properties lacking electricity and compelled agencies to call off in excess of 100 flights, based on local media.

The winds are affecting the whole South Island and lower areas of the North Island, according to the weather forecasting body.

Officials in New Zealand have issued infrequent red wind warnings - the highest alert level - in core zones encompassing Wellington and Canterbury.

Residents have been encouraged to remain inside, refrain from journeys, and make arrangements for further power and communication outages.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Response

This outage appears to be affecting households mainly in the southern region, though officials state that the electricity supply was being restored progressively.

Domestic outlets have indicated that in some places homes have lost their roofs, while power lines and trees have been toppled by the gusts.

Within the capital, a person was killed after being impacted by a wooden fragment at a frequent walking route on earlier this week.

Additionally in the city, a woman was swept into oncoming traffic on a street by a strong gust of wind, in a moment that was captured in a viral dashcam video.

Flights entering and leaving the urban area have been halted as a result of the winds, and various routes and public facilities are shut down.

At the same time local leaders have declared a crisis declaration, to assist recovery activities.

Strike Action Alongside Severe Conditions

The wild winds on Thursday occur while many of educators, medical professionals and government employees are engaged in what has been termed a "mega strike", demanding higher wages and enhanced employment terms.

Yet the extreme weather has forced them to modify various scheduled activities, with several external protests moved indoors or cancelled.

Similar gusts are impacting Australia, ushering in a heatwave to the remote areas.

Agencies have issued burning restrictions for apprehension regarding wildfires.
